About Snohomish County

Map of Snohomish CountySnohomish County was given its name by the surrounding Native Tribes, and according to local lore, Snohomish means “low lying people” and is named after the Snohomish Tribe. The meaning of Snohomish County has been has been contested though it is not hard to believe as the western half of the county is at or near sea level. Situated in the northern third of Washington State and on the westside of the Cascade Mountain Range, Snohomish County remain a close enough to the Seattle area for commuting and far enough away where personal retreats are still possible.

Snohomish County is Washington State’s 13th largest county in terms of square miles, 2,089.06 sq/mls, but 3rd in population terms. According the US Census Bureau, the 2009 population was 694,571 with there being 282,237 housing units (single family and multi-family units) and an average of 2.65 persons living in each household. When traveling around Snohomish County the one thing comes to mind is single family housing. The various of cities have many small communities made up of neighborhood parks and cult-de-sacs with the adults enjoying many golf course communities and sweeping scenic views. Snohomish County Employers

The largest employers in Snohomish County are The Boeing Company, the United States Navy, and Kimberly Clark. Combined, these three employers supply the region with nearly a 100,000 jobs. Coincidentally these three companies are located in Everett not far from each other – US Navy and Kimberly Clark on Everett’s waterfront and Boeing is located to the south at Paine Field.

Snohomish County Scenery

If you are passing through or choosing to call Snohomish County your home, you will quickly notice the two most distinctive features: The Puget Sound and the Cascade Mountain Range. These two features provide a rich outdoors environment for residents all year round. In the spring and summer, boats dot the Puget Sound and can be seen from the Mukilteo Ferry docks to Davis Slough (eastside of Camano Island). Personally, I am avid shelfisherman but there are many other sports as well as sailing and power boating that are common on the Puget Sound. In the east the Cascade Mountains command the eye’s attention. In the winter months, snow skiing and snow boarding, and snowmobiling are popular while in the summer hiking, camping, and fishing take over.
