Older Homes can Pose Health Risks

Fueling many aspects of life in Washington, environmental sustainability is on the minds of citizens of Snohomish County. Citizen based environmental advocacy organizations such as Environment Washington push independent research and a tough minded approach to tackle Washington’s special interest groups. Drawing on over thirty years of success, their goal is to help push Washington the current eco-friendly paradigm.

When buying or remodeling a new home, there are many things that a potential home owner and real estate agent should do prior to making the final move. Many homes and buildings built prior to 1980 have a strong potential of containing asbestos or other harmful materials. With a steady progression of technology and alternative ways of construction, these eco friendly methods will produce a healthy lifestyle and save you money.

Used in homes throughout the 20th century, asbestos insulation can produce Peritoneal Mesothelioma, a form of cancer where treatment is limited, chronic respiratory problems and Malignant Mesothelioma. It is important to meet with health or environmental professionals to properly examine your new property.

Health risks involved in dealing with non regulated asbestos materials should be performed by contractors, home owners or licensed asbestos contractors. Non-regulated asbestos material can be legally performed by homeowners, regular contractors, or licensed asbestos abatement contractors as long as the National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) are not violated. Asbestos removal in public facilities, homes and workplaces must be undertaken by a licensed asbestos abatement contractor. One the removal is complete, green insulation options should be given serious consideration, such as: Cellulose, Cotton Fiber and Lcynene.

Statistics show that the Lcynene foam, for example, can cut energy costs by about 35 percent annually, according to studies done by manufacturers. The other projects claim similar figures. And because these are recycled materials, less waste is going to the nation’s already crowded landfills.
